Mike Richter, Wisconsin

“My loving wife and I have been married almost 10 years ago. We each had children from first marriages, bringing us to a total of five kids. We knew that raising one short of a Brady Bunch wouldn’t be easy, but we were determined to raise our kids in a home full of love and respect. My wife and I both work in law enforcement, which provide for our family needs, teachs our kids service to other, but will never make us wealthy.

As you can imagine, provide for a family of seven has made us pretty frugal money managers. My wife and I love the outdoors and both would like to spend countless hours pursuing our outdoor hobbies. However, our kids’ sports and activities always come first—ice skates and catcher’s mitts take precedence over hunting trips or horseback rides.

My passion is hunting whitetails with bow, rifle and muzzleloader. I hunt hard around our home and have had good success. My wife jokingly calls me a ‘deer nut,’ but is very supportive of my burning desire to hun. I am either hunting any chance I get or reading about hunting.

Although deer hunting is fulfilling for me with our without killing a deer, I do dream of a hunt beyond deer hunting. My dream hunt would be to take my business partner, (my most imporant business is raising our kids), my harshest critic, my strongest supporter, my dearest wife on a moose hunt with me.

I can’t explain why or what magic a moose has that has driven me to fantasize about seeing the stream billow from a big bull’s nostrils on a frosty morning. I can feel the deep grunt sounds emitted by a big bull, deep in my chest, even though the only time Ihave actually seen a bull was when we took our kids on vacation to Yellowstone. I think about downing a big bull moose and then working with my wife to the point of physical exhaustion, packing those big paddles back to camp. This will be a memory of teamwork and success that we both will hold forever.

This type of hunt will be beyond our financial means, but really would be a dream come true to experience it together.”
